Notes:
Nagle Library Rare Books Special Collections copy has inserted: four leaves of handwritten notes, possibly in the hand of Professor J.A. Fitzherbert. "The present volume is a sequel to my Origin of tragedy, published in 1910, or rather it is an expansion of a short chapter in that work ... The materials here presented formed the subject of a set of public lectures delivered at Cambridge in the Michaelmas term of 1913. On December 10th of the same year the leading results of that course were laid before the British academy in a paper, a summary of which appeared in the Athenaeum of December 20th, 1913."--Pref.
