Abstract:
Australians at War shows in pictures and words what war meant to ordinary Australians. It contains over 200 photographs of Australian servicemen and women and also civilians at war since 1885, the year the New South Wales contingent to Sudan sailed for
Australia's first foreign war. The photographs come from both official and unofficial sources and have been selected from over 500,000 prints in the collection of the Australian War Memorial. They show hardship and humour, but above all these oustanding photographs vividly illustrate the humanity which characterises the experience of ordinary people caught up in war. The photographs are complemented by passages taken from letters, diaries or other personal papers held in the Memorial's collection. -- Book jacket.
