The year is 1939. Bede Smith, a talented young dentist, leaves Sydney to study in Canada. He could not have picked a worse time. He's on the high seas when news of war breaks. Bede continues to Toronto where he meets and marries Marg. He enlists with
the Canadian Army. The war grinds on. He leaves his wife and baby daughter behind for combat in Europe with the Allies. In 1946, Bede brings his young family home to Australia. He has two more daughters and settles into family life. But somehow what he has always wanted - a successful career, family and home - is not enough. This is a story about one man's experience of family and war. Sometimes happiness comes when we change direction.
